Sailing Holidays - Dunmore East Sea School

A group photo of the crew at the end of a lovely week cruising around Corfu

Have you always wanted to sail to remote islands, drink a cocktail on sandy beach or sunbathe on a deck next to dolphins? Now is your chance! Past trips have included Sardinia, St. Martin and Corfu. Usually clients fly to where the charter boat is docked a day or two before the sailing trip begins to explore the area, adjust to a new time zone and relax! A typical day will consist of three to six hours of sailing. During sailing, you can opt into receiving one-on-one sailing tutoring from Robert or else bring your favourite book and a sunhat and sunbathe on the deck, most people do a mix of boat! Oftentimes lunch is enjoyed on board (sometimes with a bottle of wine) and there is often magnificent views from the water. We always aim to get to the new location before dark so that sunset can be enjoyed from a fun bar or on the beach. The boat usually arrives to the new location by mid-afternoon and Robert will bring you onto the island and give you some suggestions of what to explore. You can choose to stay with the group and have some craic or if you’re craving some solo adventuring, there will be plenty to do no matter you’re interests! Dinner is normally enjoyed as a group in local restaurant and then for some it will be back to the boat for an early night but for others, the night is just beginning! The trip typically has a perfect mix of group activities, solo relaxing time, fantastic sailing, learning, drinking and swimming! As Robert likes to say,

“No one has ever regretted coming on a sailing holiday”

Fulmar Fever Cardigan Bay Cruise 15th – 21st July, 2018

For my first sailing experience I could not have been in better company, or aboard a better yacht than ‘Fulmar Fever’ winner (in its class) of the 2018 Volvo Round Ireland Yacht Race. Skipper Robert Marchant and crew members Alan Coleman and his lovely fiancé  Amy were highly experienced sailors and a very welcoming crew.

We sat sail from Wicklow Harbour on Sunday 15th having first collected Robert’s Trophy from the Wicklow Harbour Yacht Club.  Within a couple of hours of departure we encountered a storm as it got dark, which was an un-nerving experience for me, but I was re-assured by the calm confidence of all on board despite the rolling and pitching of the yacht.

Over the next five days we docked in Porthmadog, Barmouth, Aberystwyth, Fishguard, and Solva, to enjoy the local culture and hospitality. We also had a quick stop on Rampsey Island Nature Reserve, passing the ‘The Bitches’ along the way. At 5.00am on July 21st we set sail from Solva to Dunmore East arriving home at 7.30pm tired and exhilarated!

As part of the crew during this cruise I gained experience of helming, navigation, chart plotting, and so much more. All of this in addition to having a wonderful 6 day holiday. I can’t put into words what a truly unique experience this was.

Robert is such a professional experienced tutor and his passion for sailing shines through. Under his guidance I have learnt so muchI would advise anyone thinking of this kind of sailing trip to just do it.

I have already booked my next trip with Robert, can’t wait!
